April/May

Eight days of snowshoeing on Senja island – Arctic peaks plunging straight into the fjords, a cosy seaside lodge and the Northern Lights.

Senja, Norway’s second-largest island, is a true Arctic masterpiece where dramatic mountains plunge straight into the icy fjord waters. Winter snowshoeing here grants unique access to pristine landscapes, breathtaking viewpoints and secluded valleys.

This 8-day itinerary blends rewarding alpine ascents with cosy evenings, authentic coastal culture and prime opportunities to hunt for the Northern Lights.

Guide's Perspective

Senja island in Norway has a truly special atmosphere. The steep peaks plunge directly into the fjords and every walk looks like a scene from a film. I have always been captivated by the wild beauty of the North, the white nights, the vigils for the Northern Lights and the colourful fishermen's cabins by the water. During our stay we sleep in exactly this kind of wooden house – a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Arrival in Tromsø and transfer to Senja

Arrive in Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic. Meet your guide and travel by minibus and ferry to the island of Senja. Check into a cosy seaside lodge and enjoy a welcome group dinner.

Day 2: Coastal warm-up hike

After breakfast, a gentle introductory snowshoe hike along the lower heights of Senja, with first glimpses of the snow-covered northern landscape and deep blue fjords.

Day 3: Mount Flobjørn

A steady, gradual climb up Flobjørn, an emblematic peak of the area, rewarded with sweeping panoramas of frozen fjords. Quiet evening at the lodge with an optional Northern Lights watch.

Day 4: Bergshøyan mountain pass

Snowshoe through a serene snow-covered landscape up to a stunning pass overlooking the Bergshøyan archipelago and Ersfjord. Warm up by the stove back at the lodge with a hearty dinner.

Day 5: Keipen

We set out for Keipen, a prominent peak in northern Senja overlooking the fjords. The climb is steady and rewarding, with a breathtaking mix of sea, ice and Arctic silence. Evening scanning the skies for auroras.

Day 6: Hesten – the ultimate view of Segla

In winter the razor-sharp Segla is too technical, so we hike the neighbouring Hesten ridge – the natural viewpoint for the most iconic, postcard angle of Segla's sheer cliffs. Final night at the lodge with local specialities.

Day 7: Sommarøy island and return to Tromsø

We leave Senja for Tromsø, stopping on Sommarøy, famous for its white-sand Arctic beaches and small fishing communities. A last light snowshoe walk, then a farewell dinner in Tromsø.

Day 8: Departure

Relaxed breakfast, some time to explore Tromsø's historic centre and transfer to the airport for the journey home.

What Our Guests Say

★★★★★
Thank the snow gods, then thank Stan

The snow gods were kind this weekend — that's on them, not me. But Stan and the Basecamp Tours crew being absolutely dialled in? That's every single time, no asterisk. Smart route choices, safety that never feels paranoid, and feedback that actually makes you better. The snow is a gamble. Basecamp Tours is not.
