Snowshoeing in Iceland and a tour of the island – an adventure from another planet

From 18 to 26 April 2026, we embarked on an exciting tour of Iceland packed with vivid and varied experiences: visits to secret hot springs and volcanic beaches, waterfalls, scenic lakes and fjords, hikes to the largest glacier in Europe, and encounters with seals, reindeer, birds, Icelandic horses and sheep.

Snowshoeing in Iceland

We ventured into volcanic caves and walked on moss as soft as a pillow, soaked up the atmosphere of small fishing villages, marvelled at endless snowy peaks and blue fjords, and savoured the magical Arctic silence. We explored Reykjavik and Akureyri, tasted local cinnamon and cardamom rolls, Icelandic fish, lamb, special rye bread and many more Icelandic specialities.

Icelandic landscape

Part of our culinary introduction to Iceland was a visit to a traditional Icelandic house with a stunning view over the fjord, where we enjoyed a special tasting of carefully selected local foods.

Each day’s snowshoe trek began at the ocean, wound through varied terrain, and ended at breathtaking views from the tops of the fjords.

Snowshoe trek

Our guide on these treks was Svetla Stoyanova — the only Bulgarian woman to have crossed Iceland’s and Europe’s largest glacier (Vatnajökull) on skis and with a sled. With wide-ranging expertise in outdoor tourism and years of living across Nordic countries including Iceland, Norway, Svalbard and Greenland, she is also the only active translator of Icelandic literature into Bulgarian today.

Throughout the treks, Svetla effortlessly adapted to the group’s wishes, kept spirits high and offered personal tips for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. The programme also included a short avalanche safety workshop.

Hot springs with fjord view

Each day ended in hot springs overlooking the fjord and a dip in the ocean, while Svetla shared her boundless energy and enthusiasm — stories of Iceland’s character, culture and hidden gems. We spent the nights in cosy cottages, spellbound by our guide’s tales and the wonders of the North!
