Guide's Perspective
Iceland – a land of rugged beauty, volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls and endless mountain landscapes that make you forget everyday life. For me the most impressive things are the light, the variety of otherworldly scenery and the hospitable people who make Iceland both wild and cosy. I always return with great pleasure to the edge of the Arctic Circle for this journey to the East Fjords, the last truly wild part of the island.
Flight from Sofia to Keflavík International Airport (KEF). Check into a hotel near the airport to rest after the journey.
Scenic drive north-east to Egilsstaðir and on to Borgarfjörður eystri, the realm of elves. A short warm-up hike in Dimmidalur, the Dark Valley.
Trek over mountain passes overlooking Brúnavík bay and its light sandy beaches, beneath Mount Súlutindur, down to Breiðavík mountain hut.
Trek inland across rugged terrain past rhyolite and dark magmatic peaks to the remote Húsavík mountain hut.
Hike up the Nesháls pass with panoramic ocean views and descend into the hauntingly beautiful, abandoned fjord of Loðmundarfjörður.
Trek along historical sheep tracks and green valleys down to the artistic town of Seyðisfjörður. Then transfer down the coast to Höfn.
The classic day hike to Stórurð (the Giant Boulders) beneath towering cliffs. Back in Höfn, time to relax and enjoy the famous local langoustine dinner by the harbour.
Early departure from Höfn west along the South Coast. Stops include the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach, the sea stacks of Vík í Mýrdal, and Reynisfjara black sand beach or Skógafoss waterfall. On to Keflavík airport for the late evening flight.
What Our Guests Say
Thank the snow gods, then thank Stan
The snow gods were kind this weekend — that's on them, not me. But Stan and the Basecamp Tours crew being absolutely dialled in? That's every single time, no asterisk. Smart route choices, safety that never feels paranoid, and feedback that actually makes you better. The snow is a gamble. Basecamp Tours is not.
