First steps in ski touring

January

First steps in ski touring for everyone who wants to feel the freedom and magic of the winter mountains. The first steps matter most – and we know it.

This is the first of the three levels of the Basecamp Tours ski touring training program. We have built a complete module over 3 weekends in which we show, build up and consolidate the basic techniques and skills of the sport step by step. We know it takes consistent, focused training, ideally led by professionals. By the end of the module you will move correctly and confidently on skis in varied terrain, handle your equipment with ease, have off-piste experience, know the dangers of the winter mountains, have basic avalanche safety knowledge, and know where and how to go up and down safely – and when it is better to turn back.

If you are just starting with ski touring, we recommend taking all three levels within one season for the best result. You can choose this option or join only some of the trainings, depending on your experience and goals.

“First steps” is for those just starting out, curious to try something different from the familiar ski area and the lift queues. You need to ski a red piste well (at least parallel turns). We work in small groups and individually with each of you.

What is ski touring? In short, it is moving freely on skis in the mountains. It needs suitable equipment – touring skis, boots and bindings, and special skins that stick to the skis and let them slide only forward. At the top we simply remove them, lock the bindings and boots, and ski down the untracked slope.

A way of life in the Alpine and Scandinavian countries for decades, ski touring is becoming more and more popular in Bulgaria. It combines skiing and mountaineering and calls for a serious attitude, skills and knowledge of the winter mountains. For us, the word that defines it is FREEDOM: being deep in the winter mountains, far from the crowds, reading the terrain, choosing where and when to go, drawing the first tracks on the slope. Anyone who has touched this magic finds it hard to let go.

Ski touring has been our passion for years, and we want to bring more people to it, because we believe the mountains are a place for the truly free.

Package price for the whole module (3 weekends): €390 – for this option write to us at info@basecamp.tours.

Note: We keep the right to change the program in case of unforeseen circumstances beyond our control.

* Minimum number of participants – 4; no more than 6 people per guide.

* Reservation should be no later than 10 days before the program or until places run out. Reservation is considered confirmed if payment is processed within 3 days after booking.

Day 1

Meeting on Vitosha. Short briefing. We talk about the basic equipment – what, how and why. First we "stretch" the skis, focusing on the technique of walking and turning on skis, and see what skiing ungroomed terrain is like. In the afternoon we work with avalanche equipment and cover the basics of avalanche safety. Approximate end – 16:00.

Day 2

Today we are in Rila or back on Vitosha, depending on the conditions. The idea of the second day is a complete winter tour with all its details. We consolidate and build on day 1, with more attention to skiing ungroomed terrain. We believe there will be smiles on everyone's faces at the end – that matters most to us.

What Our Guests Say

★★★★★
Introduction to Ski Touring

I participated in the course "Introduction to Ski Touring" for beginners. It is perfect for people who want to try how it feels to go ski touring. Stanislav is a great instructor and explained in detail what to do and what not to do and how to get the most out of such an experience. The weather and good snow made the day even more memorable. I enjoyed the experience and will go again! :)

Thank the snow gods, then thank Stan

The snow gods were kind this weekend — that's on them, not me. But Stan and the Basecamp Tours crew being absolutely dialled in? That's every single time, no asterisk. Smart route choices, safety that never feels paranoid, and feedback that actually makes you better. The snow is a gamble. Basecamp Tours is not.
