Ski Touring – First Steps

29-30 Jan 2022

This is the first out of the three levels of Basecamp Tours ski touring training program. We have developed a comprehensive module within 3 weekends in which we will gradually and methodically show you, upgrade and strengthen the basic techniques and skills in this sport. We know that it requires consistent and dedicated training and the best option is to be led by professionals. At the end of the whole module you will be able to move properly and confidently with skis in different terrains, you will handle freely with your equipment, you will gain experience in off-piste skiing, you will learn about the dangers in winter mountain, you will acquir basic knowledge about avalanche safety, you will be able to recognize signs of instability in snow pack, you will gain basic knowledge about where and how to go up and down safely as well as when it is good to go back.
We recommend that you go through the all three levels within one season for optimal results. You can choose this option or join only one of our activities depending on your experience and goals.
The “first steps” are for those of you who are just starting out in ski touring driven by the curiosity to try something different from the familiar ski area and the lift queues. You need to have a good level of skiing on a red track (at least a turn with parallel skis). We will work in small groups and individually with each of you.
If you are wondering what does “ski touring” really is – in general it is the free movement with skis in the mountains. In Bulgaria it is also known as “pantene”. For this purpose, appropriate equipment is needed – touring skis, shoes and bindings, as well as special skins that stick to the skis and allow them to slide in one direction only, without sliding back. Once we reach the top, we simply remove them, fasten the bindings and shoes and set off skiing on the ungroomed snow slope.
A way of life among the alpine and Scandinavian countries for decades, ski touring is gaining more and more popularity in our country. Practically, it is a combination of skiing and mountaineering and requires a serious attitude, skills and knowledge of winter mountains. In fact, it is much more. For us, the main word that characterizes this sport is FREEDOM. The feeling of being in the winter mountains, away from the crowds, being able to “read” the terrain, to determine where and when to go, to draw the first tracks on a snow slope … Many people would not be able to understand this. But anyone who touches this magic will find it difficult to let go.
Ski touring has been our passion for years. And we want to attract more people to it, because we believe that the mountain is a place for the truly free, as we are.

Day 1:
At 08:30 we gather at Aleko hut. Short briefing. We will talk about the basic equipment – what, how and why. In the beginning we will “trample” the skis by emphasizing the technique of walking and turning with skis. We will see what it is like to ski in ungroomed snow. In the afternoon we will work with avalanche equipment and talk about basic rules of avalanche safety. Approximate end of the lesson – 16:00.

Day 2:
Today we will be at Rila mountain or again at Vitosha depending on the specific conditions. The idea of the second day is to make a complete winter tour with all its details. We will consolidate and build on what we have learned from day one. We will pay more attention to the skiing itself. We believe that at the end there will be smiles on your faces, which is our ultimate purpose.

Daily climbs between 500 and 700 meters, duration of tours 3-4 hours.

*Note: We reserve the rights to change the program based on weather/snow conditions.
